Extinction animations

An exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum
Hong Kong, China

While working at MCW, I had the opportunity to contribute to a large-scale animation project for the Hong Kong Science Museum's permanent exhibition. It explores the fascinating history of life on Earth: prehistoric biodiversity, evolution, and the mass extinctions that shaped our planet.

The project consisted of a six-part animated series, with each episode exploring one of Earth's six major mass extinction events. My role involved developing the illustration style, creating storyboards, and producing the final illustrations for the animations.

One of the most interesting challenges was finding the right visual balance. I've created a detailed, expressive visual style that respected the science while making these ancient worlds engaging and accessible for people of all ages.

One of my favourite parts of the illustration process was imagining the colours of these prehistoric creatures. Since the original colours are almost never preserved on fussils of ancient animals, there was room to explore different possibilities and bring my own artistic interpretation to their appearance. I loved this balance between scientific research and creative freedom: using what we know about these creatures as a starting point, then imagining how they might have looked when they were alive, moving through their ancient environments.

Here are some of my favourite scenes from the series.
